3 Dua of a Tabeyee

‘Amer Ibne Abdullah (R) was a Tabeyee. This Tabeyee attached him closely to the illuminated Sahabi Hazrat Abu Musa Ash’ari (RA). Hazrat ‘Amer Ibne Abdullah (R) divided his time into three parts. First, for the Quran. He used to teach the Holy Quran in the mosques of Basrah. Second, for Ibadat in seclusion; until he got exhausted, he stood on this feet for Salat. Third, for Jihaad. For this reason, Hazrat ‘Amer Ibne Abdullah (R) was entitled as the Abed (worshiper) and Zahed (abstinent from worldly affairs) of Basrah.
Incident of a night. A companion (of a journey) described that he followed Hazrat ‘Amer (R) and saw that upon reaching a bushy place, the Tabeyee tied his horse up to a tree and kept provision for its food. I was secretly following him and was eager to know his activities there.
I observed Hazrat ‘Amer (R) saying prayers. In my entire life, I had never ever seen someone performing Salat so attentively! After performing Salat for a long time, he lifted his hands and started saying,
“O Allah! It is You, Who created me and You are testing me in various occasions and commanded me to save myself. O Almighty! If You do not save me by Your Mercy and Favor, how is it possible that I could save myself?
You know very well that even if all the properties of this world come into my hands and then if someone seeks it, I would give away the whole of it only to attain Your Pleasure! Therefore, You provide me Your Pleasure Ya Arhamar Rahimeen!
O Allah! I love You so much that it eases every difficulty and makes me pleased with whatever You decide.
I do not care anything else when I have Your Love, when I have Your Love I do not care how my morning passes and how my evening ends.”
I [the man who witnessed Hazrat ‘Amer (R)’s worship, describes] drifted off to sleep at times and woke up — whenever I aroused, I saw Hazrat ‘Amer (R) either in Dua or Salat.
When the Fajr time commenced, I saw Hazrat ‘Amer (R) supplicating again: “O Allah! Now the light has set in, man would run for his needs the whole day, everyone has his needs and necessities…..everyone is short of something…’Amer does NOT need anything except ‘Your Forgiveness’, this is what I am short of and thus require from You!
O Akramul Akrameen! Do remove all my shortcomings as well as others.
O Allah! I supplicated for three things. You had provided two of them and I do need the other one too!
With Your Mercy, do provide me the third as well so that I could wholeheartedly perform Your Ibadat!”
The narrator continues: I was observing him, when suddenly he finished his supplications and noticed he was not alone. To his surprise he noticed me and felt uneasy. Frantically he asked, ”Had you observed me the whole night?”
“I did”.
“Then do keep everything secret please whatever you had seen.”, pleaded ‘Amer (R).
“By Allah! Either you would tell me your three duas or I would disclose all what I’ve seen!”
“O Dear! Do not think of so.”
“Do tell me then.”
“Well, if you swear by Allah that no one would know it.”
“Yes, I swear by Allah that know one would know it.” *
‘Amer (R) continued,
“It was women, which was most threatening for my Deen. I asked Allah Taala to remove their love from my heart. Allah Taala had removed it and my state is now such that a wall and a woman are similar to me.”
Secondly, I asked Allah Taala that my heart may not fear anyone except Him and only His fear may reside in my heart and none others. Now my state is such that I fear none in the whole universe, but Allah Taala.
I prayed so that my sleep disappears and I could do Ibadat the whole night heartily — this is the dua still unaccepted.”
I told him, “Have some pity on yourself! Jannah is confirmed for even a portion of whatever you have done and whatever hardship you have accomplished, only a part would suffice to keep you away from Jahannam!”
“But I fear that (for some reason) I may have to be ashamed on the court of Allah Taala on the Judgment Day! If I get free it is only due to Allah Taala’s eternal Mercy! And if I am to enter into Jahannam, that will be only for my negligence and laziness.”
[ * This implies, the narrator had revealed the incident later either by the Tabeyee’s permission or after his demise]
