Every moment of this worldly life, every breath of it is invaluable. This life has been provided for the preparation of the afterlife. Today, due to gross negligence, we are wasting this precious life by not realizing this fact. Even if we accept this as true, our thoughts and practices do not reflect evidence of the acceptance. In almost every sphere of life, we’re prioritizing the matters pertaining to this world. If we are warned about the negligence of the afterlife, we have several excuses and explanations ready.
Today, most of us are far from the goal and purpose of life. Therefore, our thoughts and actions have become centered in this world. There will be time we have to leave this world. That is the time when nothing will be in assistance except our good actions and above all the righteous faith – Imaan. This is supposed to be our firm belief as a Muslim.
However, the real condition is different. Our focus seems to be continuous in increasing worldly comforts, money, wealth, value, prestige, higher degrees and all other factors of worldly life. All our plans and hard work have made us quite indifferent about the afterlife. It seems as if the life of the world is just everything to us. Stay here, eat, walk, win or lose! Luxury and ambition have driven us crazy. What I am doing, what I am gaining, what I am losing – there is no worry of any accountability. In such a state, the inevitable death suddenly arrives! Our beloved Prophet ﷺ has urged us to remember the taste-destroying (death) matter excessively. How many of we pay heed to it?!
It is not too long ago, we have come into this world. Our age is indicating how much time we have already spent in this world. This is the exact period we have already drawn near towards our grave! We are craving to attain our objectives and desires. We are busy focusing on our needs and wants. But my life may end before most of them materialize! The angel of death is always approaching someone. My turn is also to come. I don’t know how unexpected that time will be for me! I don’t know how much prepared I will be at that moment. This is the reality. For many the situation is going to be unpleasant and of great discomfort. They are the ones who had turned a blind eye to the warnings of the Quran and Hadith. For the believers, who believed in the message of the Quran and Hadith, this will be the time of reward and enjoyment! Such individuals will see their eternal success.
Messengers have come into this world in ages. They have warned their nations of both the consequences – what would happen if we abide by the divine revelation and what if we don’t abide by it. Now the choice is ours. We have got a short life span. Everything in our possession belongs to Almighty Allah. He bestowed His plentiful blessings to us. Therefore, we need to appreciate His favors upon us. Fortunate are we, if we die as a Muslim. Unfortunate will be for us, a matter of great misfortune, if we die without Imaan. When this life terminates, loss of this invaluable asset, the one-time invaluable opportunity will be irrevocable and irreparable.
Allah Subhanu wa Taala says:
Meaning: Man will say on that Day, “Where is the [place of] escape?” No! There is no refuge. To your Lord, that Day, is the [place of] permanence. [Surah Qiyamah: 10-12]
