Hakeemul Ummah Hazrat Mawlana Ashraf Ali Thanvi (R) stated, “The benefits and achievements which the pious men mention regarding Zikr can be attained when man accomplishes two more tasks simultaneously:

One: Talk less and refrain from unnecessary talks.
Two:
Reduce the span of relationship with people.”First is: Talk only when it is necessary. Hazrat Mawlana Thanvi (R) said that until and unless with Zikr, the quality of talking less is not developed, the worldly benefits of Zikr would NOT be attained.

Second is: Maintain a reduced span of relationship with people. Nowadays, the practice of mixing and intermingling with lot of people, arranging meetings and maintaining a high degree of intimacy with them has become a custom. This custom teaches that how more and more relationships could be established. But on the Path of Islah (Self Reformation), to mix and intermingle with too many people unnecessarily is detrimental. Yes, if there is a relation established that should be done for the sake of Allah Taala. The relationship with family members and friends must therefore also be for the sake of Allah Taala. However, the absolute benefits of Zikr are not attained due to maintaining too much relationship with people in view to fulfillment of self-interests.
